TeachingSpace - Woodland Ways - Sense of Place

Sense of Place

This activity allows the young people to consider their thoughts and feelings about being out of doors in a natural place.

OBJECTIVE: to consider a personal reaction to a natural environment.

TIME: 15 - 20 minutes

LOCATION: within different types of woodland.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: activity sheet; sense of place - 1 each for each environment.

The Activity

Choose a place where you can all sit comfortably with a clear view of the area. When you are settled close your eyes and relax for a minute. Open your eyes when you are ready and complete the sheet.

Take a look at the activity sheet. For each pair of words a mark should be put in the square nearest to how you feel (right or left). If you don't feel particularly one way or the other then mark the middle box.

Move to a different type of woodland and repeat the exercise.

When you have finished try to write down words of your own which reflect how you feel about the contrasting sorts of woodland.

Suggested follow-up

woodland mushrooms

Discuss some of the following:

What do you like or dislike about the particular places?

Does everyone feel the same? Was it how you expected?

How would you feel about these places at night or in winter...?

Collect the words together for storytelling or poetry in the sand.
