Management of SPAs
Natura sites are generally underpinned by the SSSI mechanism in the terrestrial environment, although there are a few exceptions. Alternative measures such as positive management schemes are employed to safeguard sites in these cases.
Under SNH’s Natural Care Strategy creating appropriate positive management of SSSI and Natura sites, SPAs are a priority. Have a look at some of the Management Schemes currently being developed, including those for corncrake, moorland birds and geese.
Another mechanism to manage SPAs is through partnership projects under the European LIFE-Nature fund. Here are a few past and present schemes, including LIFE-funded projects, that SNH is working on with other partners.
- Hebridean Mink Project (LIFE Project) to help to safeguard bird populations in SPAs in the Western Isles
- Uist Wader Project also addressing the decline of breeding waders on North and South Uist and Benbecula
- Urgent Conservation Management for Scottish Capercaillie (LIFE Project)
