The Natural Heritage Futures initiative promotes integrated management of the natural heritage and is based on three main outputs. "From National…" considers the natural heritage across 6 themes; "…to Local" considers the natural heritage in 21 areas each of which has its own distinctive identity resulting from the interaction of geology, landforms, landscapes, wildlife and land use. These are underpinned by the supporting reference documents - National Assessments - which provide data and information about the natural heritage, presented both at national level and within each of the 21 areas.

Scottish Natural Heritage has prepared a suite of publications to guide the future management of the natural heritage towards 2025, within the wider context of sustainable development. Our landscapes and wildlife are highly valued assets which have often been shaped by human activity. Under sensitive management, the natural heritage also has the potential to enhance people's lives and provide substantial economic benefits. As far as possible, these documents aim to identify common goals and encourage an integrated approach in which all sectors work together. SNH will use this initiative, called Natural Heritage Futures, to inform its own priorities and as a basis for further work with partner organisations.

The vision and objectives for the natural heritage set out through Natural Heritage Futures link to a wide range of other strategies and initiatives, including A Forward Strategy for Scottish Agriculture, the Scottish Forestry Strategy and Biodiversity Action Plans, as well as local initiatives such as Indicative Forestry Strategies and National Park Plans. Natural Heritage Futures aims to stimulate the wider debate necessary to establish a broad vision for sustainable development in Scotland, and to translate it into action. The principles underlying the initiative are described in An Overview.
