Important Fungus Areas
The fact that the larger fungi only become evident at certain seasons and in certain years has led to their needs being largely overlooked by conservation until the Biodiversity Action Plan began to focus attention upon them. A significant step to address this omission was taken in 2001 when Plantlife, the Wild Plant Conservation Charity, in liaison with the British Mycological Society and the Association of British Fungus Groups published a provisional assessment of Important Fungal Areas in the United Kingdom. Important areas in Scotland cover habitats ranging from moss cushions on limestone boulders to unimproved grasslands and woodland, especially of pine and oak.
