Species and the law
In response to the vulnerability across Europe of all the species in this booklet important sites have been identified in Scotland and designated as Special Areas of Conservation under the EC Habitats Directive.
Freshwater pearl mussels are also fully protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, making it an offence to deliberately kill, injure or disturb them.
