What is TIBRE?

TIBRE – Targeted Inputs for a Better Rural Environment – is an initiative by Scottish Natural Heritage that aims to show how technology can be used in farming to benefit the environment.

TIBRE aims to show that environmentally responsible farming can be compatible with intensive methods and strong business objectives.  Many new developments in technology that will improve the business performance of the farm can reduce the risk to the environment that may result from farming.

The TIBRE Arable Handbook provides information on 49 technologies and techniques including crop protection chemicals, machinery, diagnostics, information technology, fertilisers and crop varieties.  It is developed and maintained up-to-date in close consultation with a group of arable farmers and advisers in Scotland.

Over the last few years, there have been a variety of new technological developments with the potential to help farmers achieve greater environmental standards, gain access to quality markets and help meet their cross compliance requirements under GAEC (Good Agricultural and Environmental Condition).
