How to use TIBRE
The website aims to be practical to use. The most important part is Technologies
and Products, which contains the data sheets. These highlight 49 techniques
and products with the information grouped under the headings of the main
arable operations - including Crop
Establishment,
Crop Nutrition, Crop Protection
and Harvesting, as well as a section on General
Management.
Within each section, you will find a set of data sheets on different types of technologies ranging from machinery or diagnostic equipment to ways of using IT and mobile communications. Each data sheet provides information about a product or a technology and its benefits for both your business and the environment. The information will enable you to choose those aspects that are most suitable to your business and most relevant to your environmental objectives. For example, if your farm is in a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone (NVZ), you may wish to concentrate on the technologies that help minimise potential nitrate leaching losses.
Note that the information provided in How much will it cost you? aims to give a general indication of the scale of costs and benefits associated with the purchase and the implementation of the technology or product. It does not provide a tool for comparing different technologies and products. The symbols used do not represent equivalent numerical values: for example a low to medium cost capital investment cannot be compared to a low to medium operating cost.
You can use the website in several ways. At the simplest level, you could browse through the data sheets, choose one or two products that interest you and adopt them. Each product and technology can independently deliver benefits to farming practices and provide an improved level of environmental protection. However, if you are prepared to go beyond these simple choices, you will be able to make more and better use of the available technology by planning your approach more thoroughly. Give careful thought to your current farm management and the scope for improvement from both the business and environmental point of view. We recommend that you consult an adviser before adopting the technologies and products contained in the webiste.
For any product, it is important to follow good practice to achieve full farming and environmental benefit. New technology on its own cannot replace careful use.
You may also wish to consider implementing some of the ideas described in the
section
Good Management Practices to enhance the environmental benefits from
the use of the TIBRE products and technologies and help support farmland
wildlife.
