Access Improved to Skye's 'Old Man'

The footpath leading up to the Old Man of Storr

A project by The Highland Council to upgrade access routes to one of the most heavily visited places on the Isle of Skye, has received a grant of £23,000 from Scottish Natural Heritage.

Work is being carried out on three sections of the 1.3km footpath leading up to the Old Man of Storr, used by some 50,000 people each year.

As well as improving access to this popular attraction, this will reduce erosion on the surrounding habitats, which form part of Trotternish Ridge Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

SNH’s access officer in West Highland, Stewart Sandison, said: “The fact we have put such a large amount of money into this project demonstrates the importance that we place upon the site. This essential footpath work will mean that visitors will be able to walk up to the site, without damaging the important habitats that have developed on the hillside over the centuries.”

The project is also being funded by Skye and Lochalsh Enterprise and Community Economic Development, with additional money being provided through the NVA project.
