CASS wins 'Best of the Best' Award!

Early in 2010 we found out that the European Commission had shortlisted the Conservation of Atlantic Salmon in Scotland project for the 'Best of the Best' LIFE Nature projects in 2008/9. In May we heard the good news - CASS had won a prize as one of the top five such projects across the whole of Europe.

As well as the significant outcomes achieved in terms of improving salmon habitat, the accolade also recognises the success of CASS as a partnership project and the commendable efforts of all those involved.

Back in 2004, we secured one of the largest grants that year from the European Commission. Angelo Salsi, Head of the LIFE Nature Unit, obviously considers it money well spent. In presenting the award he said:

"The CASS project shows what a dedicated partnership and a well-managed LIFE Nature project can do to reverse the decline in biodiversity. It exceeded its objectives, reopening over 150km of rivers to the Atlantic salmon. As a result salmon are now returning to rivers where they have not been seen for as much as 250 years!"
