Places to Visit for Wildlife and Landscape - Caithness

Blank image

Name: Thurso River

Habitat type: River

What can I see there?

The tidal stretches of the River Thurso, which pass through the centre of the town, are good places to watch wildfowl and wading birds. Tall sedge and reed beds fringe the river, and salmon may be seen jumping. There are public footpaths along both banks. Thurso Museum is open in the summer (June to September) and has a collection of fossil fish discovered nearby as well as a display about the famous local botanist Robert Dick.
