Amphibians and Reptiles
Scotland has a limited herpetofauna (reptiles and amphibians), with 9 of the 12 non-marine species which are native to the British Isles.
The waters of Scotland are regularly visited by up to five species of marine turtle. Whereas several introduced species of herpetofauna have become naturalised in England, only the sand lizard Lacerta agilis and alpine newt Triturus alpestris are known to be established in the wild in Scotland.Other non-native species, such as grass snake Natrix natrix, are recorded sporadically, perhaps as escapes from captivity.
