Fish

More than 160 species of fish occur in the inland and coastal waters of Scotland.  These exist in distinct aquatic habitats - freshwater, estuarine or marine - although some species, such as the European eel Anguilla anguilla, are found in all three habitats at some stage of their life cycle.

Several species of rare UK fish are found in Scottish inland and coastal waters. For example, out of only seven known locations in the UK for the powan, two occur in Scotland.
