Lower Plants

'Lower Plant' is a general term which embraces a wide spectrum of organisms across four taxonomic kingdoms.   Many are not 'plants' at all, but include the non-vascular, non-flowering true plants, such as bryophytes (mosses and liverworts) and algae.

Knowledge of species occurrence and distribution varies considerably between groups. Nevertheless it is evident that Lower Plants make a significant contribution to the natural heritage, not only in terms of the sheer abundance of species but because they are often fundamental to the functioning of other organisms or habitats.
