Renewable Energy - Biomass

Advice

Because few bioenergy schemes have as yet come forward in Scotland, the detailed advice which SNH is able to offer is limited. The development of bioenergy will have effects on land use and consequently can impact on landscape, biodiversity and on soil and water resources. This can result in both threats and opportunities for the natural heritage. The nature of the impacts will depend on the type of feedstock, siting of plantations, previous land use, scale of development, spatial distribution and management.

SNH is currently finalising its policy position on bioenergy and is in dialogue with the Forestry Commission and others to discuss how we respond to the future growth of the bioenergy sector.
