Significance of impacts on birds outwith designated areas

SNH is often asked for a view as to what level of adverse impact on bird populations we consider to be significant. Where Special Protection Areas or SSSIs are affected, the test of significance is grounded in legislation and based on maintaining the integrity of the site and the species and habitat interests for which these are designated. However, where impacts do not affect such designated sites, the issue has been open to expert judgement. The following guidance aims to fill that gap.
