The UKRSG meets twice yearly to discuss current issues, to assess the work carried out by the country squirrel groups, to recommend future work to ensure that the Species Action Plan targets are being met and to ensure that everyone is kept informed of progress across the UK. Progress with the implementation plan is assessed at each meeting.

Membership of the UKRSG

The red squirrel SAP requires that government, the devolved administrations and their relevant conservation agencies (Joint Nature Conservation Committee, Natural England (formally English Nature), Countryside Council for Wales, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Environment and Heritage Service Northern Ireland) be responsible for assisting the co-ordination and implementation of country and regional SAPs for this species. Country fora have been set-up to facilitate this process and they are represented on the UKRSG, along with relevant government departments, such as the Forestry Commission and non-governmental organisations such as the Wildlife Trusts.
