The status of and threats to red squirrels in the UK are not uniform and there is a need for specific implementation of the Species Action Plan for the different countries and regions of the UK, to best protect and conserve local populations of red squirrels. Country Squirrel Groups have been formed in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales and are represented on the UK Red Squirrel Group to ensure that the UK advice is widely applicable and allows for best practice to be shared across boundaries.
The country squirrel groups provide a forum for regional and local squirrel groups to interact with the UKRSG allowing a two way flow of information. This ensures that advice and strategies are coordinated to allow direct cross border collaborations and comparisons as well as to allow practical field conservation and issues to be fed back effectively.
Regional and local red squirrel groups have a vital role in red squirrel conservation. They undertake practical ground work: recruiting volunteers, promoting awareness, educating the general public and carrying out management and monitoring of sites at a local level, so it is important that all parties concerned with red squirrel conservation know what is happening on both the wider and smaller scales.
