We consulted local access organisations and invited representatives with disabilities to visit and comment on the site during its development phase. Good practice would indicate that ideally these groups should be involved from the outset. They are able to identify changes that will make it easier for them and people with other disabilities to use the site. We intend to organise a return visit so that we can get feedback now that the site is open to the public.

There is ongoing investment in disability awareness /equality training for staff, particularly visitor centre and shop staff. Staff need to make visitors with disabilities feel welcome, understand their needs and have a good working knowledge of the available facilities.

|
We are developing written procedures so that if a fire breaks out, for instance, then staff know how to evacuate visitors with disabilities safely.

Similarly, staff have an effective procedure and appropriate training to respond to the emergency alarm in the disabled toilet.

It is important to plan for the long-term maintenance and refurbishment of the site. Too many facilities are built and then fail to be updated regularly, leaving them looking tired and neglected. Maintenance is also critical in protecting the capital investment and prolonging the life of the facility.
