Direct people around a site in a particular way

Art installations can also be used as landscape markers. We have used them to act either as 'beacons' to encourage visitors to keep walking along the trail, or to provide a sense of occasion and achievement when the public reach them.

  • This much photographed sphere, which Joe Smith created from slate, is purposefully sited to draw people up the trail at Knockan Crag. It is symbolic of the global context of the Knockan story and relates to trail interpretation telling the story of Scotland's journey over 600 million years from the South Pole to its present day position on the globe.

  • Few visitors to Beinn Eighe walk the Ridge Trail without stopping at the pair of 'pine seed' seats by Joe Smith. These sit back-to-back and provide stunning views of the mountainscapes to north and south.
