Artists can contribute to local distinctiveness and enhance a 'sense of place'. They are equipped with a range of imaginative and practical skills that enable them to look at the natural heritage with a fresh eye and capture the spirit of a site. Their work not only looks good but also brings new meaning and significance to places.

  • Dramatic and surprising pieces like these 'totem poles' by Susheila Jamieson have transformed a featureless woodland at Beinn Eighe into a memorable visitor experience. The tree-like interventions consist of single oak branches with hand carved tops representing plant motifs. Alongside is a wave form seat to complement and contrast with the totem poles.

  • An evocative quotation from a Norman MacCaig poem has been cut into a rock at the edge of an impressive viewpoint near the descent from Knockan Crag. The MacCaig excerpt concludes the trail interpretation on an ambiguous note, leaving visitors to define meaning in the poetry for themselves.
