Environmental Impact Assessment
SNH has produced a handbook intended to provide Competent Authorities statutory consultees and others involved in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process in Scotland with practical guidance and a ready source of information about the process. In places, it illustrates or concentrates on the treatment of natural heritage issues but, even where there is such a focus, the principles are often more widely applicable to other environmental topics. It is intended to help all of those involved in the process to make it more effective and therefore lead to better informed decisions.
The Handbook is divided into six parts:
- Introduction to this Handbook
- Introduction to the Environmental Impact Assessment Process.
The Handbook then considers each of the main steps in the process of EIA, under four main stages:
- Prior to the Submission of the Environmental Statement
- Consideration of the Environmental Statement (and Project Consent Application)
- The Decision Making Stage
- Implementation and Compliance
The Handbook also contains six Technical Appendices which deal with detailed methodologies for impact assessment for:
- Landscape and Visual Impacts; (You may also wish to look at the Landscape Character Assessment Guidance)
- Ecological Impacts;
- Earth Heritage Impacts; (You may also wish to look at the Minerals Guidance.)
- Soil Impacts;
- Countryside Access Impacts; (You may also wish to look at the Recreation & Access Home Page for more Information.)
- Impacts on the Marine Environment.
