Biodiversity > Role of Local Biodiversity Action Plans
At a national level a whole raft of organisations are involved in implementing the individual habitat and species plans within the UKBAP. This national activity is being complemented by the work of LBAP partnerships, which were conceived as a means of delivering the UKBAP at a local level. The LBAP partnerships should provide:
-
A planning and strategy role in the development, implementation and monitoring of non-statutory local biodiversity action plans, to enable the delivery of actions for both local and national priority habitats and species;
-
An outreach, partnership and capacity-building role, raising awareness and understanding of biodiversity and its contribution to sustainable development, building partnerships to co-ordinate and efficiently use resources, and fostering the ability of others to incorporate biodiversity objectives in delivery;
-
Impetus for practical action influencing the management of land and resources in ways which benefit biodiversity.
Coverage and status of local BAPs
LBAPs started with a pilot project in 1996. After a slow start, there was a rapid rise in partnerships and supporting project officers. There are now LBAPs for every local authority area across Scotland. (apart from one).Examples of some of the LBAPs online
